  • Book criticism of “The Expanse” series

Posted on Thursday, 12.05.2016 17:45 by sebrem Comment

So, I read books, and I like to write about my impressions. Here is, what I’ve written in a public facebook post this morning about the expanse:

Public book criticism time! 🙂 Today: “The Expanse” (novel series) or “Leviathan Wakes”, “Caliban’s War” and “Abaddon’s Gate” by James S. A. Corey (which is an author’s duo consisting of Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck) – also now a SyFy series “The Expanse”.

It’s hard to describe the plot without major spoilers, so I just say it’s set a couple of centuries into the future, humanity has settlements all over the solar system, on Mars and Jupiter’s moons, there are major physical and political differences between the 3 fractions (people from Earth, Mars and the “belt”), growing up in low gravity leads to people having long extremities, being dressed up in space suits to communicate by gestures (nodding with the hands instead of the head for example), and everyone distrusting everyone from somewhere else. Some very disturbing events happen in this setting which is already full of tension, so the story spans over three books to describe where all of this leads to.

Disturbing is a good attribute in my opinion, especially for the first book (“Leviathan wakes”) – some of the elements described were haunting me a bit later, again, I don’t want to spoil anything but let’s say, it’s been graphic enough for me (OK, I don’t watch too many horror movies anyway so your mileage may vary). I am very fond of “near future” science-fiction, this is a genre which works without much “deus ex” technology and provides enough present-time technological elements so you can identify easily with the world built by the authors. It’s also the case here, they still have LED technology and are very fond of their handsets. The books describe some of the causalities of living off-earth quite detailed, someone should make a word count of “gravity well”. 😉

It’s one of those “each chapter is told from someone else’s perspective” kind of books, so you get “internal monologue” from different characters. I don’t know if I’m really too fond of this, but I guess it’s a good way to push the story forward and also makes TV adaption easier (hat tip to GRRM). Speaking of GRRM, the writers are members of a New Mexico author’s association where GRRM also is participating, in one of the interviews they value the imput they got from this group during the creative process.
Overall, I liked reading “The Expanse” series very much, I stumbled upon it at Fefe’s blog and haven’t been disappointed. It’s one of the books you can’t put out of hand easily because the story is proceeding fast-paced and you get to like the characters. I didn’t need the graphic horror elements, but on the other hand they were adding up to the drama of the situation. It has enough politics, technology and psychology to build a well-round world and vivid characters, each book of the series presents different aspects and thus doesn’t repeat itself.

Read it, if you like science-fiction, space ships and have a faible for the military or political culture of the United States of America (knowledge of which doesn’t hurt to see where they’re coming from).

  • New union action against Deutsche Bahn (for public transport from Wed, May 20, 2015 – terminated May 21)

Posted on Monday, 18.05.2015 16:52 by sebrem Comment

    – Der Streik der GdL wurde beendet, es gilt (heute am 21.5.) aber weiterhin der Streikfahrplan
    – The union action was terminated, but for today (May 21st) there’s still the emergency timetable in place
    – Se han terminado la huelga, pero para hoy el horario de emergencia todavía está en vigor

    …Go to English version

New union action against Deutsche Bahn, starting for passengers Wednesday 20.5.15 2am and going on at least over ‪Pentecost‬ weekend.
The end of the strike will be announced 48hrs in advance. Basically trains operated by Deutsche Bahn are affected (S-Bahn, RB/RE, IC/ICE), there many connections will be cancelled. Trains of different operators (eurobahn, Nordwestbahn etc.) only are affected indirectly by delays of operations at Deutsche Bahn caused by the strike so they can also be late. Mind that there can also be delays before and after the strike.

The emergency schedule for Dortmund says:

    • RE4 + RE11 and also S2 are cancelled
    • RB53 and also S1 + S4 + S5/S8 operate on an hourly basis
    • RB51 + RB 57 operate every 2 hours

    Timetable information:

    • At http://www.bahn.de/liveauskunft, in the DB Navigator app or at m.bahn.de Deutsche Bahn is promising to offer realtime information.
    • At http://www.bahn.de/blitz/view/nrw/uebersicht.shtml there will be the list of cancelled trains (emergency timetable) in NRW (written in German)
    • See http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/ for realtime information (multilingual) – look for red x symbols as well as red and grey triangles, they might point to information saying the train is cancelled!

    Alternative transport options:

  • Debian 8.0 Jessie – server upgrade notes

Posted on Sunday, 26.04.2015 17:09 by sebrem 2 Comments

    General

So the blog and my email address have been unavailable a few hours as I was thinking I could just run the upgrade in the background on a Sunday afternoon. My fault. 😉

See the Debian Jessie announcement and Debian Jessie release notes for general information.

On my system there’s only a web- and a mailserver with some antivirus and firewall stuff. So I had to adjust some Apache settings and fiddle with dovecot and some other start scripts. I was happy the udev maintainer included some checks against the kernel version, as I run a xen-based virtual root server by Vollmar.net and thus don’t install the kernel by myself (and stick to udev 175 or it wouldn’t boot any more 😉 ).

    Apache 2.4 httpd

For the Apache webserver there are upgrade notes available in the documentation, I had to get rid of the NameVirtualHosts directive (if untouched the /etc/apache2/ports.conf file from Debian does the trick but I modified mine) and change
    Order allow,deny
    Allow from all

    into
    Require all granted
everywhere in order to allow access to the web-roots again. Also the sites-available files now require a .conf suffix.

    postgreSQL

Take care, it’s confusing, there will be the daemons for 9.1 and 9.4 running in parallel, the client will be the one of 9.4 but uses the 9.1 cluster. So only remove 9.1 after you migrated successfully from 9.1 to 9.4 (most probably by removing the existing 9.4 cluster created during package installation and running pg_upgradecluster 9.1 main).

    phpMyAdmin

If you get errors like "PHP Fatal error: require_once(): Failed opening required '/usr/share/php/php-gettext/gettext.inc' (include_path='.') in /usr/share/phpmyadmin/libraries/select_lang.lib.php on line 463" you need to upgrade your /etc/phpmyadmin/apache2.conf – most probably there’s a /etc/phpmyadmin/apache2.conf.dpkg-dist already sitting next to it, also see #709302 (it’s not a bug 😉 ).

    postfix/dovecot mailserver

    dovecot

So it seems that I did nearly make no changes in /etc/dovecot/conf but this lead to my IMAPs/POP3s daemons not starting any more. In the end I guess the ssl configuration was the culprit, I uncommented the lines pointing to my SSL-key files in 10-ssl.conf, no idea whether this was the 100% correct approach, it’s usually better to create local configuration.

    clamav-daemon

For some reason I was hit by Debian #778507 – a letter was missing in /var/lib/dpkg/info/clamav-daemon.postinst, so line 626 has to be
    [ -n "$PidFile" ] && echo "PidFile $PidFile" >> $DEBCONFFILE

    bley

I use bley by Evgeni Golov for greylisting, here I modified the init script by myself before to include the postgresql dependency and now had to accept upstream changes. But they also include a dbconfig-based database configuration now.

    fail2ban

The fail2ban package seems to be more verbose now, so I could fix some typos in the rule files (one time the name of a local file was misspelt, one file lacked the ignoreregex= stanza).

  • Lokführerstreik / Information regarding train driver strike in Germany Apr 22/23, 2015

    …Go to English version…

There will be an union action against Deutsche Bahn from 4/22/15 2am to 4/23./15 9pm I’ll try to update this post regarding the newly announced strikes of the train driver’s union GdL, but I also have a day job so I can only try to do this irregularly. The most important information (emergency timetable) is usually in an info box right hand at http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de (also available in English and other languages, they usually update the schedule as well, pay attention to red or grey triangles), more details regarding the union action are also on http://www.gdl.de or in the (German) news, try http://www.thelocal.de/20150420/gdl-deutsche-bahn-train-rail-strike for example.
Affected are regional and long distance trains (S-Bahn, RB/RE, IC/ICE), not metro or tram. There should be an emergency timetable so you can get along but have to plan for delays. In Germany you’re responsible on your own how to get to work on time, there are some employers with sympathy for problems if you need the Deutsche Bahn to get along, but in the end it’s your problem and you have to see how to cope with it.

    Links with further information:

    • This http://www.bahn.de/p/view/home/info/streik_gdl_042015.shtml is a list concerning long distance connections, the online schedule will be updated during this (Tuesday) afternoon)
    • This http://www.bahn.de/blitz/view/nrw/uebersicht.shtml is the list of cancelled and changed trains in NRW

So today I took a day off and went to Westfalenpark to see the 100.000 crocus plants Fee ist mein Name and Dortmund überrascht Dich wrote about. And indeed they have been there! If you look closely you’ll also see some bumblebees buzzing in the flowers 🙂

So today I’ve been meeting two CouchSurfing friends and we took a walk around Kreuzviertel, through Bolmke and Westpark. It really felt like spring 🙂

PS: Yes, I’m addicted to sunsets and flowers 😉

  • A glimpse of Spring, Mar 7, 2015

Although meteorologically it’s still winter, today it’s been a very nice day in Dortmund. As I’ve been around with two nice friends I was not in the mood for taking too many pictures, also we’ve been to Rombergpark and Phoenix-West, where I already have taken too many pictures 😉

But here are some migratory birds (actually if you look closely they are in all of the first 4 pictures), clouds and a sunset 🙂
