  • Spring has begun, Mar 20, 2014

It’s spring 🙂 I would have loved to put up pictures of butterflies but unfortunately the little fellows have been to busy today to pose for my camera, so it’s flowers instead. I’ve been at Nordstadt, An der Palmweide, in Technologiepark and Dorstfeld in Dortmund and at Zollverein in Essen that day.

Sun sets behind Dortmund Universität, 19.03.14 18:50 – you could say those were the last rays of winter sun 2014 🙂

  • Memorial Steinwache Dortmund

Yesterday I’ve been asked by a guest about the Steinwache memorial – I must admit that after nearly 15 years in Dortmund I never thought much about it, I was thinking it was like one room with some black/white pictures, but I did not know how wrong I’ve been all the time.

The memorial has a permanent exhibition about German history from roughly 1930 to 1945, with a focus of the events in the area around Dortmund. It’s a refurbished prison and each of the 50 cells on 3 levels has a different topic. So you should take some time, at least 2 hours I’d say. The easiest way to understand the contents in English is to buy the € 0,50 guidebook in English.

I did not want to take pictures inside it. Admission is free, see http://www.dortmund.de/de/freizeit_und_kultur/stadtarchiv/steinwache/ (in German) for more information.

  • Stroll around the former Museum Ostwall, Dortmund, Feb 27, 2014

Yesterday I tried to find the building of the former Museum Ostwall, located at said thoroughfare. I had to learn I was mistaken about its position all the time, I mistook a school building for it and yesterday even went into the secretary office of Stadtgymnasium to ask about it. But finally I found the building, but unfortunately I was one month late to see the latest (or final?) exhibition, which was closed end of January.
The future of the site is still subject to political discussions, see the page of a citizen’s group (in German) for more information.

Below are some pictures I took that day in the area.

  • Making sense of the remaining leave today and tomorrow

So, after a bit of a gloomy time I had during the last weeks, today I finally had a good start into my last 2 days of spending the remaining leave of 2013 today and tomorrow. 🙂  I’ll probably meet some people from “Neu in Dortmund” at Cakes’n’Treats at 10.30 (feel free to join, there’s also an FB event visible for members of said group).

Later at 13.00 I’ll meet at least one friend for lunch at Caracalla (feel also free to join).

Then there’s a pending couch request (the first “official” of this year, the other guests were friends who contacted me directly) by an interesting person, she’s from NZ and travelled 6 months through Europe and I guess she’ll have some stories to tell, should she make it to Dortmund tomorrow.

Having nearly made up for the days off hour-wise in the office this week I hope to spend not too much time at the PC, there are some private tasks left but I guess I’ll just do the ones friends asked me for and leave the not-pressing private ones (working on the blog for example) to a rainy afternoon . 😉

To those who celebrate carnival during the next days, have a good time!

  • Shortcut from Dortmund-Dorstfeld to Dortmund Uni is open, Feb 5, 2014

It must have been weeks ago that the shortcut from Dortmund-Dorstfeld to Uni has been opened. I’m talking about the new road that leads from “Dorstfelder Allee” to the roundabout close to “Tryp Hotel” in Eichlinghofen. Here’s a map:

And here are some pictures I took from the passenger seat of a car:
